SANITATION CRISIS

 

The problem of improper sanitation had existed for years in African countries. The data of 2015 revealed that around 2.6 billion people across the globe lacked access to adequate sanitation and waste management services. These people often relieved themselves near rivers, on the roadsides, and in poorly built latrines. In the process, they contaminated waterways and food supplies. This resulted in life threatening infections like diarrhea and cholera.

Across the globe, slums housed over 1 billion people. In underdeveloped and developing countries, there were numerous sprawling slums where hygiene facilities barely existed. One such region was Sub-Saharan Africa where the proportion of people living without access to sanitation facilities was as high as 50% of the total population. Lack of physical space, infrastructure, and adequate resources combined with high density population in slums had led to a sanitation crisis and endemic violence against women......
